GREETING
Leader:
In the name of the Father (+)
and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit.
All : Amen.
Leader:
Blessed be the Lord,
who has heard
the sound of my pleading.
All :
The Lord is my strength
and my shield,
in whom my heart
trusted and found help.
So my heart rejoices;
with my song I praise my God.
Leader:
Lord, you are the strength
of your people,
the saving refuge
of your anointed king.
All:
Save your people,
bless your inheritance;
feed and sustain them forever!
Leader:
Let us all consider
the Good Shepherd who,
to save his sheep,
bore the suffering
of the cross.
All:
The sheep of the Lord
followed him in tribulation
and persecution and shame,
in hunger and thirst,
in infirmity and temptations
and in all other ways;
and for these things
they have received
everlasting life
from the Lord.
OPENING PRAYER
Leader:
Let us pray.
God our refuge
and strength,
close at hand
in our distress;
meet us in our sorrow
and lift our eyes
to the peace and light
of your constant care.
As we pray for (N...),
and for all our
deceased brothers and sisters,
help us so to
hear your word of grace
that our fear will be
dispelled by your love,
our loneliness eased
by your presence
and our hope renewed
by your promises in
Jesus Christ our Lord.
All : Amen.
New Testament Reading
A reading from
the first letter of St Paul
to Timothy.
(1 Tim 1:12, 114-17)
I thank him
who has given me
strength for this,
Christ Jesus our Lord,
because he judged me faithful
by appointing me
to his service,
and the grace of our Lord
overflowed for me
with the faith and love
that are in Christ Jesus.
The saying is sure
and worthy of full acceptance,
that Christ Jesus
came into the world
to save sinners.
And I am the
foremost of sinners;
but I received
mercy for this reason,
that in me, as the foremost,
Jesus Christ might display
his perfect patience
for an example
to those who were
to believe in him
for eternal life.
To the King of ages,
immortal, invisible,
the only God,
be honour and glory
forever and ever. Amen.
The word of the Lord.
All : Thanks be to God.
PSALM (56)
O Most High,
when I am afraid,
in you l place my trust.
God, I praise your promise;
in you I trust, I do not fear.
Response:
I will walk before God
in the light of the living.
This I know:
God is on my side.
God, I praise your promise;
in you I trust, I do not fear.
What can mere mortals
do to me?
Response:
I will walk before God
in the light of the living.
I have made vows to you, God;
with offerings I will fulfill them.
Once you have snatched me
from death,
kept my feet from stumbling,
That I may walk
before God
in the light of the living.
Response:
I will walk before God
in the light of the living.
REFLECTION
Leader:
Death is inevitable,
yet the loss
of a close friend
or family member
always showers us
with a range of emotions.
One day we might
desperately try
to avoid the pain,
anxiety and feelings
of helplessness we feel
when a loved one dies.
Other days, we feel like
life has returned to normal—
at least until we realize
that our life
has changed irrevocably.
Despite the gamut
of emotions we feel,
grieving for a loved one
helps us cope and heal.
The intense, heart-breaking anguish
indicates that a deep connection
has been severed.
Without a doubt,
grieving is painful.
But it is also necessary.
Going forward doesn't mean
forgetting about the loved one
who died.
Enjoying life again doesn't imply
that the person is no longer missed.
Piecing together
your shattered emotions
doesn't mean you, somehow,
betray a friend or family member.
It simply means
that your grief
has run its course.
(Pause for personal, silent reflection)
INTERCESSIONS
Leader:
Let us now pray with joy
to Christ the Lord.
He rose from the dead
and is living now
to intercede for us.
Response:
Lord, renew
the whole of your creation.
All:
Lord, renew
the whole of your creation.
Christ, Saviour of the world,
king of the new creation,
you are enthroned
at God's right hand;
set our hearts in the things
that are of heaven.
All:
Lord, renew
the whole of your creation.
Lord, you are living always
in your Church;
lead her through the Holy Spirit
into the fulness of your truth.
All:
Lord, renew
the whole of your creation.
Have pity on the sick,
the distressed and the dying;
strengthen, comfort
and sustain them.
All:
Lord, renew
the whole of your creation.
Christ, unfailing light,
accept our devotion this day;
shed the radiance
of your glory
on the faithful departed,
especially on
our brother/ sister (N..).
All:
Lord, renew
the whole of your creation.
THE LORD'S PRAYER
Leader:
Let us now pray
the prayer that
Jesus taught us.
All:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven.
Give us this day
our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
CLOSING PRAYER
Leader:
Let us pray.
Forgiving God,
in the face of death,
we discover
how many things
are still undone,
how much might have been
done otherwise.
Redeem our failure.
Bind up the wounds
of past mistakes.
Transform our guilt
to active love and
by your forgiveness
make us whole.
We pray in Jesus' name.
All: Amen.
Leader:
Eternal rest grant unto (N...)
O Lord.
All :
And let perpetual light
shine upon him/her.
Leader:
May he/ she rest in peace.
All : Amen.
Leader:
May the soul of (N...)
and the souls of all
the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God,
rest in peace.
All :
Amen.
Let us all,
everywhere,
in every place,
at every hour,
and at all times,
daily and continually believe,
truly and humbly,
and let us hold
in our hearts, and love,
honour, adore, serve,
praise and bless,
glorify and exalt,
magnify and give thanks
to the most
High and Supreme,
Eternal God.
Leader:
In the name of the Father (+)
and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit.
All : Amen.
